Desegregation, vouchers at issue in court hearing

Posted: Updated:

Decades-old school desegregation cases and Louisiana's private school tuition program, now in its second year, are the subject of a scheduled federal court hearing.

U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle was set to hear arguments Friday on whether court approval is needed for the state to issue the government-funded vouchers in districts still under longstanding desegregation orders.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration says the case is part of an attempt by the Justice Department to control the state voucher program.
