Bowie County Courthouse lighting canceled

Posted: Updated:

The Christmas lights of the Bowie County Courthouse will not shine this holiday season.

Bowie County Judge Sterling Lacy says the expense for installing the lights was not approved by commissioners, but some commissioners say that's simply not true.

The Bowie County Courthouse in New Boston is one of the only courthouses along an interstate highway in Texas.

Every Christmas season, thousands of traveling motorists have the opportunity to see the glowing landmark from I-30, but not this year.

"Why play politics, just turn the lights on," said Joseph Lima, New Boston, Texas resident.

Lima visited the courthouse to check on the possibility of installing the lights with donations, but he said the answer was no.

"There's no statute that says they can't accept private donations to turn the lights on at the courthouse, like it's been for many years," said Lima.

Judge Lacy says lighting the county courthouse for the holidays was canceled because expenses for installing and operating the Christmas lights were opposed by the four commissioners.

Commissioner Pat McCoy says the judge never approached him about the lights.

"The expense for the ceremony every year in the past has been under general miscellaneous in the budget, there was money in there last year and there is this year," said Commissioner McCoy.

McCoy says there's about $5,000 in the budget for Christmas expenses, but even so, they should try to make adjustments on spending.

"If our county judge wants to hold a ceremony, he simply needs to work with the employees and the commissioners to make that happen, it can still happen," said McCoy.

Lima says if the community wants the lights on, there shouldn't be an issue.

"We all pay taxes in the county, in a Godly way, just turn the lights on," said Lima.

Judge Lacy says there will be a Christmas party for the community, even if he has to foot the bill himself.

It will be held on December 10th at 5 p.m.
