Search continues for Ricky Maxie's killer almost three decades later

Posted: Updated:
MANSFIELD, La. -

This Sunday, Nov. 24, marks almost three decades since Ricky Maxie, 24, disappeared in 1984.

A year after his disappearance, police found a skull along Hwy 175 in DeSoto Parish less than five minutes from his home. The skull sat in Dr. George McCormick's Bossier Parish pathology lab for more than twenty years because authorities said the skull matched someone of Hispanic decent, and Maxie was African-American. They wouldn't connect the bone to Maxie until 2006 when the LSU Faces lab reexamined it.

Police say it's hard to pick up a investigation decades after the initial case, but they're confident someone knows something to crack this case.

"People have the tendency to brag about what they've done, especially years after it happened," says Robert Davidson. "We just need some phone calls from somebody who knows anything."

Davidson has been with this case since the beginning. He was working patrol for the sheriff's department when a passing motorist found Ricky Maxie's skull along the side of the road. Davidson says when investigators got DNA confirmation in 2006 and realized Maxie had been dead for decades, they put the word out and got another break.

"After he was identified, we got a call from a person in Shreveport that told us these two people ran together and they were involved in narcotic trafficking," Davidson says of the two suspects in the case.

Police tracked down the two men to find out one of the suspects, Wayne Simmons, had recently passed away.

Davidson says he believes the other man- who he identifies only as Ricky- had more information than he let on, but he again slipped through the cracks.

"We talked to him on time and had him take a polygraph- which he failed," Davidson says. "We went back to talk to him, and he'd left the area he lived in. They didn't know where he went to. I think maybe he's just on the streets and living door-to-door."

Davidson says the search continues for the second Ricky. Davidson says he's hesitant to give a last name because there's no warrant for his arrest, but he describes Ricky as someone with a considerable arrest record- including drug charges- who likely lives in the Shreveport-Caddo Parish area with friends.

Davidson is confident they'll find the second Ricky again with help from Shreveport Police and the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information is asked to call the DeSoto Parish Crime Stoppers line at 1 (800) 505-STOP. There is a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
