Shreveport small businesses do not compete with big box stores this Black Friday

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

This coming weekend is the biggest shopping time of the entire year. It's kicked off with Black Friday, and rounded out with Cyber Monday.

But Small Business Saturday is also wedged in there—a day for folks to focus on locally owned stores.

King Hardware will participate in Small Business Saturday. However, its owners said trying to compete with the big national chains is just not cost effective for them.

"We have never tried to compete," said Elizabeth Mcelhatten, owner of King Hardware. "We are not a big box store. They have different incentives than we do."

Mcelhatten said the merchandise her store offers is different from what the big box stores can offer. That's what sets it apart as well as its customer service.

"We feel like we have knowledgeable sales staff, and we have the things that you aren't going to be able to find at other businesses around town," she said Monday. "We have the capability to order things that other people might not be able to order."

Making sure their customers are treated right is also the main priority at The Spotted Zebra.

"We try to be very helpful with customers," said manager Alyssa Young. "We try to offer a very unique style, helping customers pick out outfits, and making it a very fun environment."

While the store will not be open on Thanksgiving or even early on Black Friday, Young said they do offer incentives to their customers shopping Friday.

"We'll have a tent sale outside, with a lot of very good, $10 gifts out there," said Young. "We'll also have quite a few drawings. We'll be giving away a couple pairs of Toms; a couple of gift cards for our scarves."

The shops at the Uptown Shopping Center try to make the Black Friday shopping experience a family friendly one, while also promoting its local stores.

There will be a visit from Santa as well as a bounce house and face painting for the kids. That will start at 11 am Friday.

Small Business Saturday is sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives.

You can find out which small businesses in the ArkLaTex that are participating by clicking here.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge.
