Millions expected to hit the road & take to the skies for Thanksgiving travel

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

The rush is on to get to grandma's house for Thanksgiving.

AAA projects 43.4 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holiday weekend, and 25 million will take to the skies.

Travel agents say, while many people head somewhere warm for Christmas, Thanksgiving is all about traveling to be with loved ones.

"It just seems like, when it comes to Thanksgiving, and that's where they're going, wherever their family is, that's the norm."

Pat Caraway, owner of Caraway Travel in Shreveport, says weather can wreak absolute havoc, not just on flights being canceled, but also on re-booking those canceled flights.

"Almost every plane is full so if you start having problems, it just, excuse the pun, 'snowballs' through everything."

For that reason, Caraway's number one tip - whatever you do - don't be late for your flight.

"These flights are slotted in and everything needs to flow smoothly. So you want to be on time because it's going to leave without you."

Caraway says expect delays on Sunday, as the mad dash to make it back home kicks into high gear.

"It causes a lot of traffic on that day, a lot of traffic."

Shreveport Regional Airport officials say they've got airport officers, as well as TSA staff, trained to handle the additional traffic.

Officials say cancellations in the Ark-La-Tex are rare, but if there are weather-related issues in larger cities like Dallas or Houston, Shreveport Regional often accommodates those diverted flights.

The website expertflyer.com suggests tips like packing small for carry-ons, check no more than one bag, always use a TSA lock, and plan for emergencies or delays.
