Is the meaning of Thanksgiving getting lost?

Posted: Updated:

After gobbling up Thanksgiving dinner, many Americans will be hitting the stores.

While the holiday has traditionally been a day for family, turkey and football, more and more retailers are viewing it as a chance to kick off the Christmas shopping season.

So is the meaning of Thanksgiving getting lost?

K-Mart shopping center, Wal-Mart supercenter, and Big Lots, these are just a few of the select retailers that have chosen to open with special sales on turkey day.

"People who like to shop, it's more exciting for them, said Teresa Dempsey, Texarkana resident. "It gives them more opportunities to shop and takes a little bit of pressure off them to do it all at once."

While Dempsey doesn't see anything wrong with Thanksgiving sales, she's not going to participate.

"It's just a time to be thankful for everything you've been blessed with in life, and a time to share with family and friends," said Dempsey.

She is dropping off supplies at the Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter.

The groceries were gathered by her co-workers from Christus Saint Michael Hospital.

"That's thing about Texarkana, when we ask for things or need something, they come out and donate, said Marlo Wesley, Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter volunteer.

Wesley is helping prepare a big traditional Thanksgiving meal for about 250 people at the shelter.

He says they're expecting more than 50 volunteers to serve.

He says that's what the holiday is all about.

"The holiday is about giving thanks and help everybody, which that is how we should be everyday," said Wesley.

While holiday sales are expected to be up, Angel's clothing store in Texarkana will not be open on Thanksgiving.

Employee Mary Felty says we shouldn't taken our blessings for granted.

"It's like we can't even now set aside even one day to be thankful for what god has given us, and just not be caught up in the materialism," said Felty.

Nearly one in four people responding to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation say they will shop on Thanksgiving.

However, some marketing experts say opening on Thursday is not going to lead to more retail sales and there is not much of a competitive advantage.
