LSU meets on Thanksgiving, hopes to slice Hogs Friday

LSU's coaches and players met Thanksgiving Day for a final walk through and a traditional meal together.  Les Miles says he is certain he has several players who could put on five pounds at one sitting, but he hopes none of them do so today.  Part of the reason for having the team spend Thanksgiving together was to promote team unity.  Another part was to also make sure no one overate to the point it would affect Friday's game.

LSU will be looking for its ninth win of the season, in hopes of being able to play for another ten win year in a bowl game.  Arkansas has lost eight in a row and is 0-7 in SEC play.  The last time Arkansas went winless in conference play was during World War II, 1942, in the old Southwest Conference.

Series record: LSU leads 36-20-2.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

LSU wants to finish in the top 14 in the BCS standings in order to have an outside chance at a Sugar Bowl bid, or otherwise receive the best non-BCS bowl bid it can get. Arkansas seeks to avoid its first winless Southeastern Conference mark since the Razorbacks joined the conference in 1992.

KEY MATCHUP

Arkansas' strong running game, which has amassed more than 200 yards in seven games this season, against LSU's interior defensive line, which has had an inconsistent season and struggled to stop the run two games ago against Alabama, yielding 213 yards.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Arkansas: RB Alex Collins leads all freshmen in the NCAA with 998 yards rushing this season. His average of 90.7 yards rushing per game ranks fifth in the SEC.

LSU: Zach Mettenberger is 74 yards passing from becoming only the third QB in LSU history to eclipse 3,000 yards passing in one season. The senior has averaged 266 yards per game, and with two games left (including a bowl), that puts him on pace to surpass LSU's all-time single season mark of 3,347 set by Rohan Davey in 2001.

The game marks the 18th meeting since the winner began receiving the Golden Boot, a 175-pound trophy, standing about 4 feet tall, in the shape of the states of Arkansas and Louisiana. LSU has won 11 of the previous 17 "battles for the Golden Boot." ... LSU is 6-0 in Tiger Stadium this season and has won 30 of its past 31 home games, the lone loss coming last season against Alabama in the final minute of that game. ... Collins is 2 yards from becoming only the second player in Arkansas history to top 1,000 yards rushing as a freshman, joining Darren McFadden. ... Arkansas center Travis Swanson is slated to make his 50th start, which would mean he started every game of his career since redshirting in 2009. ... Arkansas has never lost nine games in one season. ... LSU WRs Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry entered this week as the only 1,000-yard receiving duo in the nation. Beckham has 56 catches for 1,101 yards and eight TDs, while Landry has 67 catches for 1,059 yards and 10 TDs.
