MARSHALL, Tx. (KTBS) -

By Sunday afternoon, Kari Rene Dunn was dead, and officials say her estranged husband, Brad Allen Dunn, was on the run.

He left the Baymont Inn and Suites on SE End Blvd. in Marshall, TX, where Kari was found unresponsive, with the couple's 4-year old daughter, Kylie, late that morning.

But he wouldn't make it far, thanks to an Amber Alert issued by the Texas Dept. of Public Safety.

A driver recognized his maroon Ford Expedition in nearby Cass County, TX, and called police.

"I think the scariest part is when a victim decides they're going to leave a violent relationship."

Brooke Barton, with the Women's Center of East Texas, says the danger increases dramatically when a victim of domestic violence decides it's time to leave.

"Their chances of becoming a statistic or becoming murdered because of it increase by 75%," Barton says.

According to Gregg County jail records, Dunn had been arrested multiple times, including four times for assaulting and injuring a family member.

It's not clear if that family member was Kari Dunn, but it's this type of criminal history that keeps Barton working to break the stigma of domestic violence, and help victims become survivors.

"Our goal and our plan is to help them stay safe, whether they're going to stay with their partner or if they're leaving."

Bond for Dunn has been set at $5 million dollars, with an additional $100,000 for an evading arrest charge out of Cass County.

The Dunns also have two other children.

4-year-old Kylie Dunn was found unharmed when her father was taken into custody, and she was returned to family members.

No details have been released regarding how Kari Dunn died, pending the results of an autopsy.

The Women's Center of East Texas has served battered women, their witnessing children, and victims of sexual assault for over 30 years.

Their 24-hour hotline is answered 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. That number is (903) 295-7526 or (800) 441-5555.
