BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTBS) -

First it was Shreveport, now Bossier City residents will see a sewage rate increase. The city council voted 4 to 2 in favor of adopting a $15.00 hike Tuesday.

The increase is a flat rate, and it will mean there is more money designated for capital improvements.

Several people came to the council meeting to hear the discussion. Five people spoke out, both Individual home owners as well as one director of a mobile home park.

More than one person suggested an incremented rate. They suggested starting at $5.00 and it goes up every year.

Another person suggested letting the rate reflect the usage.

They all agree: a $15.00 sewer increase as well as the $8.00 trash increase already in place and possible increase with new water meters is just too much for those on a fixed income.

"There's a lot of people who can not afford this," Gaye England told KTBS before the meeting. "They say it's a difference in medicine and food. And that's the only way they'll be able to pay it."

Before the vote, a few council members expressed their opinions, including council Vice President Tim Larkin. He agreed the increase is a lot but it could cost the residents more if the system fails to be in compliance with the government.

The $15.00 hike will show up on Bossier City residents' bills in January.
