Camp Minden Explosion: Could It Happen Again?

Posted: Updated:
CAMP MINDEN, La. -

The explosions that happened at camp Minden back on October, 16th 2012 knocked over a train and created a black crater.  The explosion also rocked Northwest Louisiana and sent shock waves all the way into East Texas and Arkansas.  Businesses and homes received minor but noticeable damages.

At first people didn't know what it was.  Some thought a meteor had hit the area. We then found out that it was a stockpile of black powder on National Guard Army Base, Camp Minden that for some reason blew up.  A company by the name of Explo Systems managed the stockpiles and apparently, they screwed up.  Governor Bobby Jindal says they aren't the only ones to blame.

"The army should have been monitoring this process. . . obviously the company had not processed it the way that it had promised and there was no accountability," says Jindal.

Since the explosion any munitions that were not housed in a bunker were moved into ATF approved igloos until they are moved off the base.  Army Major General Glen Curtis says there is still a risk that another explosion could occur.  "There are no safety issues. If there was an explosion of some type the igloos would contain it. It may shake a little bit but it's not going to pose any danger to people around Minden or on camp Minden," says General Curtis.

A lot of work has already been done to move the improperly stored explosives into the igloo bunkers, but there's still more work to be done. Governor Jindal says the clean up and removal of the stockpiles of ammunitions from Camp Minden will start in January.  He says Louisiana tax payers should not have to pay for the clean up.  Jindal says

The U.S. Department of Defense and Explo Systems should pay the bill. He says the clean up should be finished by 2015.
