Filipino teachers working in Caddo Schools update

Posted: Updated:

Filipino teachers working here in Caddo Schools are fighting to stay in the U.S.
And it's a fight that's not easy.

One was Nino Arcamo who, wanted to fill his destiny of having the opportunity to teach.

"Our attorney told us that our labor certification would not get approved because there where American citizens who were qualified for the job, and so that was the reason why we cannot stay
and we need to go home," said Arcamo.

The group says they had been grossly overcharged immigration fees.
The school board voluntarily contacted the labor department to correct the issue.
Charles Lowder says caddo parish has made a tremendous investment in the Filipino teachers..

"We've worked with our school board attorney and our immigration attorney to work with them to getting their Visas or their green cards and so we are still in the process with that," said Lowder.

Arcamo says being allowed to continuing teaching in the U.S. would be a big relief for his entire family.

"This is my new home not my new home but my families home now and this is the place where I want to see my daughter grow and work here in Shreveport," said Arcamo.

Back in 2008. 42 Filipino teachers were hired to take hard-to-fill Math, Science, Special Ed and English teaching positions at 25 schools in Caddo Parish.
