Rumors continue about Mack Brown's future at UT

Posted: Updated:
AUSTIN, Tx. (KVUE) -

There has been no let up in the rumors surrounding University of Texas football coach Mack Brown's future.

According to an OrangeBloods.com report published on Tuesday, Brown is planning on stepping down. The report sites "two high-level sources" and says Mack's expected to make the announcement by the end of the week.

However Mack Brown himself denied the online report Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm in Florida recruiting," Brown reportedly texted to Bobby Burton of 247sports.com. "If I had decided to step down I sure wouldn't be killing myself down here. I have not decided to step down."

On Wednesday the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Nick Saban will leave his job as coach of Alabama to take over the Texas football program. Alabama's athletic director says Saban's focus is on recruiting and the Sugar Bowl right now.

Saban signed a contract extension with Alabama back in March, saying he intends to finish his career there. But the Texas vacancy has rattled Alabama. They have even offered to match any amount Texas offers to keep Saban there.

Meanwhile Mack Brown's lawyer Joe Jamail says when the coach does in fact step down, it will be on his own terms. ESPN confirmed that Brown is not leaving as well, saying the university denied the report on Tuesday.

New UT athletics director Steve Patterson released a statement Tuesday afternoon, saying, "We continue to discuss the future of Texas Football. Mack Brown has not resigned. No decisions have been made."

Texas rode a six-game winning streak to an 8-4 record this season, but losing two of the last three games makes for yet another disappointing season for Brown.

Brown's contract runs until 2020. Sources say that Brown will get a nearly $3 million buy-out, as well as a yearly salary of up to $1 million as part of the deal. Brown did not confirm any of this information.

Former Texas wide receiver Kwame Cavil was one of the former players that addressed the Longhorns team last Thursday prior to the Baylor game. Cavil said his interactions with Brown left him with no indication that he was ready to step down as head coach. In fact, he said, their conversations indicated the opposite.

Brown will be in San Antonio Thursday for the pre-Alamo Bowl press conference. He will most likely get a question or two about the affair.

The UT Board of Regents is scheduled to meet Thursday at a time when Regent Wallace Hall faces impeachment over accusations that he misused his office in an attempt to force out President Bill Powers.

Powers' employment is on Thursday's agenda. He's led the university since 2006.
