Byrd season ends with disappointing loss

Posted: Updated:
New Orleans, La. -

The Byrd Yellow Jackets watched their season come to an end Thursday night in New Orleans with a disappointing loss to Rummel.  Byrd scored on its opening possession, but missed the extra point and that one play would become a major factor.

So would several other plays and Byrd will leave thinking it should have won the game.  Kirkland McCulloch ran an interception back for a touchdown and Byrd had a 19-10 lead at the half.

The Jackets led 22-16 until a controversial touchdown after Byrd fumbled the football away.  Rummel's Ivan Phipps ran 22 yards but appeared to fumble the football as he was about to cross the goal line.  The play was ruled a touchdown but replays seemed to show it should have been ruled a touchback, giving the ball back to Byrd.  Instead, Rummel went up 23-22 which would eventually become the final score.
