LHSAA State Championship Wrap

Posted: Updated:
New Orleans, La. -

A record number of 5 North Louisiana teams played for a high school state championship this weekend.  KTBS' Alex Anderson was there from beginning to end and delivers this overview of the 2013 LHSAA title games.

Thursday

Calvary Baptist 62, Archbishop Hannan 7: Paced by junior Orlando Bradford's four touchdowns, Calvary Baptist defeated Archbishop Hannan, 62-7 to capture the 2013 LHSAA Division III State Championship.

Capturing their first football state championship in school history, Calvary Baptist (9-4) scored on the second play from scrimmage on a 26-yard touchdown run by Bradford to grab a 6-0 lead.

Rummel 23, Byrd 22: Ivan Phipps' 22-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run proved to be the game-winner as Archbishop Rummel defeated C.E. Byrd 23-22 in the 2013 LHSAA Division I State Championship.

Trailing 7-6 at the end of the first quarter after a 2-yard touchdown run by Keith Fulton, the Yellow Jackets (11-2) would take the lead in the second quarter when Kirkland McCulloch intercepted a Chase Fourcade pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

Rummel (10-3) would get as close as 12-10 in the first half after Justin Mourain's 27-yard field goal but Byrd answered with Tyler Howard's 1-yard touchdown run to get the game back to 19-10.

The Yellow Jacket lead would shrink to 19-16 two plays into the second half when Fourcade connected with Steven Dunbar for an 86-yard touchdown pass.

Friday

Kinder 34, Many 20: Jordan Vickers' 3-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes to go in the game proved to be the game winner as Kinder defeated Many 34-20 to capture the LHSAA Class 2A State Championship Friday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Trailing 20-18, Kinder (14-1) drove 87 yards on 16 plays and consumed over nine minutes in the fourth-quarter, culminating with Vickers' touchdown run to secure the school's third state championship and its first since 1978.

Haynesville 42, Mangham 21: Kendrick Jackson's fumble recovery in the end zone proved to be the game-winner as top-seeded Haynesville defeated Mangham 42-21 to capture the 2013 LHSAA Class 1A State Championship on Friday afternoon.

The win for the Golden Tornado (14-0) is the 16th overall state football championship for the North Louisiana program, second only to John Curtis' 26 state championships in the Louisiana record books.

Saturday

Acadiana 77, Parkway 41: In arguably the most impressive state championship game performance in Louisiana High School history, the Acadiana Wreckin' Rams defeated the Parkway Panthers 77-41 to capture the 2013 LHSAA Class 5A State Championship Saturday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Acadiana (14-1) broke the state championship record for points and rushing yards, rolling up 670 yards. Four different Acadiana players had more than 100 yards rushing, led by Edward Cormier's 175 yards on 30 carries and four touchdowns. Elijah Leday had 163 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, Donovan Soloman had 156 yards on 13 carries and De'Edward Cormier added 142 yards on 13 carries.

Falling behind 42-13 at halftime, Parkway (13-1) would cut the lead to 49-35 late in the third quarter on a William McKnight 8-yard touchdown run. Panthers quarterback Brandon threw for a Class 5A record 355 yards on 13-of-27 passes for three touchdowns but was also sacked five times and threw three interceptions.
