School Board approves 3 new charter schools

Posted: Updated:

The Caddo Parish School Board considered  applications from six organizations hoping to set up charter schools in the district. The green light was given to 3 of them Tuesday night.

Kimberly Williams, an educational consultant based in Baton Rouge, commended the board on it's decision."I  think the board said it best, charter schools are here to stay.  Local district have to learn how to work within charters and not against charters . I think this board has done a phenomenal job in navigating through that," said Williams.

The organization hopes to open it's doors for the 2015-2016 school year.

Pathways in Education was approved. As well Bishop Larry Brandon's L. L  Brandon Academy of Arts' and Technology Charter. Brandon says the school is an all boys k through 12 school that  was approved. "Of course the subjects we are going to focus on are technology and the arts," said Brandon.

The organization has to present the board with information about the school's budget and building that is expected to be housed at a former nursing facility by March of 2014.
If those stipulations are not met, the approval could be revoked.

The board also denied three charter school applications. 1. Destined for Greatness University Academy Project R.E.F.R.E.S.H; 2. The Earth Planet Charter School, Saving the Planet by Going Green. 3. The Red River Charter Academy and Caddo Charter Academy (Louisiana Achievement Charter Academies, Inc
