Blood drive to honor Grambling students killed in car crash

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

To say the last year has been tough for 24-year-old Jarde Miller, would be, by far, an understatement.

Miller and another family member survived a horrific car crash on Interstate 20 near Ruston on December 13, 2012 that killed her boyfriend, Michael Hubbard, Jr., and their best friend Andrew Perkins.

Hubbard had just been pinned in a ceremony for Grambling State University nursing students and was set to graduate the next day.

"I'm just missing my brother and my fiance more than ever," says Miller.

But through the darkness, a light shines, because there was a third survivor of that wreck - Miller and Hubbard's then-unborn daughter, Mallorie, now six months old.

"Sometimes when we're sleeping, I'll look over and she sleeps with her mouth open just like him and I can just laugh."

The laughs come a little easier now, but Miller says there are still days when it's nearly impossible to cope with the loss of two men described as true role models in their community.

"Whether they knew you or didn't know you, they were very respectful and mannerable, very God-fearing young men."

The families held a blood drive last year, to help replenish the supply that was used to treat Miller and Perkins in the hospital.

This year, they're continuing the effort to do what Michael and Andrew would have done without a second thought - give back.

"If I would have known a year ago what I know now about giving blood, I would have been doing it," Miller says.

The blood drive will be this Saturday, December 21st, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, located at 4670 Lakeshore Drive in Shreveport.

Miller says the families have also started a scholarship fund for Grambling nursing students, as well as students studying music.
