LifeShare reports critically low supply of O-neg blood in Shreveport

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

LifeShare Blood Centers is in desperate need of type O negative blood.

LifeShare says the local supply for O negative blood is currently just over three days.

Staff at the center are sounding the alarm because blood donations generally decrease during the holiday weeks, reducing the blood supply level.

"Less businesses and schools hold blood drives near the holidays, and any drop in the O negative supply is going to push us into a critical level. Because of this, we are asking anyone with O negative blood, or those who do not know their blood type, to donate blood as soon as possible," says Tina Hooper, Director, PR and Communications for LifeShare Blood Centers.

Hooper says the shelf life is 42 days, so an influx of O neg in the next few days would help carry patients through the period of low donations.

O negative is the universal donor, meaning that all blood types can receive O negative blood, which is key in emergency situations where the patient's blood type is not known.

Also people with O negative blood type can only receive O negative blood.

The following LifeShare Blood Centers' locations are open for blood donations along with several mobile blood drives in the area.

Centers listed below close at 2p.m. Dec. 24 and Dec. 31; and are closed all day Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
