Child Predator App Lands Man in Jail

Posted: Updated:

20 year old Chris Nixon faces federal child porn charges tonight.

He was arrested Monday night in Jackson Parish.

Police say he recorded himself engaging in sexual contact with a child under the age of 10.

And it's all because federal officials had a little help from you, the public, and technology-by means of an app. It's called the operation predator app. It hasn't been out for long but it's already landing criminals behind bars. The app, which is available on only on itunes right now, is free and officials say it puts the suspects picture and information right in the palm of your hands.

"It's very surprising, I would have never imagined this could be happening. But I'm just going to pray for his family and pray for him too." Tina Goytin lives in Quitman and knows Chris Nixon's family. She says the arrest sent a shockwave through the small town. But that arrest was made possible with the more than 50 tips that came to investigators after they released Nixon's information through an alert in the operation predator app.

"You'll look at it, see pictures of the individual as well as any information and if you recognize this person, right there from the app, you can send a tip to law enforcement." Bryan Cox is a spokesperson for ICE, the federal agency investigating child porn cases. He says launching the app and sending those alerts are crucial to finding suspects. "When it comes to child predators, everyday is a day that this individual could be molesting a child." Cox says, Nixon's profile was viewed more than 88 thousand times through the app. "When the alert went out, we were able to take the individual into custody in less than 4 hours in the time that the alert was issued."

The app was released in September and officials say they are working to make the app available for Droid users.
They also say, the more people to download the app, the more arrests they believe will be made in when it comes to child predators.
