Texa$ Longhorn$, college football's most profitable team

Posted: Updated:
Austin, TX -

Texas players met with reportersThursday for the first time since Mack Brown announced his retirement and most expressed shock and disappointment.  The team wants to make sure Brown goes out a winner when Texas plays Oregon in the Alamo Bowl December 30th in San Antonio.

New Texas athletic director Steve Patterson has hired an eight-person search committee to help him hire the next coach.

And this decision becomes critical beyond the obvious of winning and losing football games.  The Texas football program is far and away the most valuable and profitable in the country.  In a report released by Forbes Magazine, the Longhorns bring in tens of millions of dollars more than any other program in America.

According to Forbes, in the last year the Texas football program brought in revenues of 109-million dollars, with a profit of 82-million.  This is just football.  Nine of the top 20 programs are from the SEC, but no one is close to Texas.

Michigan is number two in terms of profit at 58-million dollars. That's from revenue of 81-million.. And that revenue trails Alabama..

But the Crimson Tide spend so much they rank fifth in profit at 47-million.  Florida nets 49-million on annual revenues of 75-million.

LSU has annual revenue of 74-million dollars with a net profit of 48-million dollars, then Alabama

Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Georgia are the others with net profits of 40-million or more.

This is just one example of why the stakes have become so high.  When seeing the money involved, one could also make a case that a coach like Les Miles or Nick Saban is actually underpaid.
