Be fair repeal moves forward

Posted: Updated:

Last week, in a historic vote, city council members approved the be fair ordinance.
The ordinance says that it's against the law in the city of Shreveport to discriminate against someone because of their sexual orientation at work and in housing decisions.

But not everyone supported the ordinance.
Last week's vote was 6 to 1 with city councilman Ron Webb as the only no vote against the be fair ordinance.
This week, Webb has taken his opposition to the legislation a step further and is looking to have the ordinance repealed.

"I've worked with homosexuals before but I don't socialize with them." That's what Ron Webb said during the city council meeting on December 10th. And now he's following up with a new piece of legislation to repeal the be fair ordinance. Webb wasn't available for comment before Friday's meeting but offered an explanation for his opposition when the ordinance passed. "I just don't think that we should be the ones to make the decision to be the ones to say we're going to fine whoever because they feel like they've been discriminated against because of their sexuality," Webb offered.

John Denison with the Forum for Equality supports the be fair ordinance and says they'll continue to do so. "You don't want to hear a landlord say, well your a lesbian woman and we can't let you live here because we don't allow lesbians to live here. That's not fair."

Adrienne Critcher with PACE helped to bring the be fair ordinance to Shreveport and says originally, Webb supported the cause. "When we told him that we actually had PACE officers that had been fired after receiving great job reviews. When their boss found out they were gay, do you know what he said, he said they should sue."

Critcher says she's not sure why webb has changed his position but his new stance on the issue is one she says shouldn't be tolerated. "Ron Webb wants us to put up a sign saying 'gay people, enter at your own risk.'"

Apple says that some celebrity accounts were deliberately targeted and hacked, leading to the posting of nude photos online.
Apple said Tuesday that hackers obtained nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other female celebrities by pilfering images from individual accounts rather than through a broader attack on the company's services.
