Saturday storms threaten smaller Christmas shopping crowds

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

When Kyle Gray found out his nephew's Christmas gift didn't come with the headphones required for use, it sent him back to Best Buy for a last-minute purchase. Only days before Christmas, he prepared for more trouble at the store.

"I expected it to be a little busier, and a little heavier on the traffic," Gray says. "It was actually really easy to get here. I didn't have a single horn honk the entire trip."

Best Buy store supervisor Travelle Evans says this weekend's traffic level will be similar to the crowds seen Black Friday. They've prepared with longer hours- open until midnight, truckloads of additional merchandise and more manpower.

"We're staffed to the max," Evans says. "All hands are on deck, as they say."

While severe weather threatens to keep shoppers at bay, Evans says they're pushing people to instead buy online and pick up from the store once the storm clouds clear. The consumers who do show up during storms, he says, are usually more serious about their shopping list.

The National Retail Federation expects holiday retail sales to increase by 3.9% in 2013 despite a shorter time span between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

With a rise in online classes, many educational institutions are asking the question, how can they maintain academic integrity in the digital age. More and more students are getting educated through online sources, to match courses to their busy schedules, avoid long commutes or to save money. "Well, people who are local to the Shreveport area, they have the option of coming in and actually taking the exam at an assigned time. They don't have to pay for the exam.
