A road to come, Dawson Road project gets funded

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, La. -

Dawson Road residents' long wait is over. This past Monday, Caddo Commissioners passed the 2014 budget. The $2.5 million for a project that'll extend Dawson Road was included. It won't happen overnight, but in a couple of years, a drive down the road may look different.

Dawson Road will be paved and extended to Greenwood Road, possibly by 2015. Residents are thrilled the commission included the project in 2014's budget.

"They worked on it," Lora Timberlake said. "We've been talking about it for several years. We're happy that they came to a conclusion to vote for and in our favor."

Commissioner Ken Epperson says the $2.5 million for the project will be split. Next year, a little more than half will be spent on planning the new route, buying the land for it and a feasibility study. The rest will be spent in 2015 on similar expenses. Epperson also expects construction to take place then.

"It will just open up that area south," Epperson said. "I think it's much needed to help this parish grow."

Epperson believes the budget was passed because of the Dawson Road residents' persistence.

"I think it got to a point in time where the citizens said, 'We just got to let them know that's what's needed there, and we're going to do anything we possible can to make this happen.'" Epperson said.

Some residents say they've wanted for an extension for 50 years. Commissioners passed the project 11 to one. Earlier in December, the issue divided the body and kept next year's budget from passing on schedule.
