Arklatex In Depth: Star of Bethlehem

Posted: Updated:

With the celebration of Christmas so near there comes reflection of the blessed event. One of the important parts of the holy account of Christ's birth is the guiding star of Bethlehem. Looking skyward we learn more in this Ark La Tex in depth report. The story is written The magi, the three wise men who traveled from afar.

Dr. Jerry Drummond of the Shreveport-Bossier Astronomical Society says "The three wise men or the three magi actually came from Persia or eastern Iraq. Present day Iraq or parts of Arabia. The wise men were a combination of astronomers or astrologers really"

It's common for present day people to attempt to place a scientific explanation to such celestial events. Whether a supernova, comet with a gossamer tail pointing toward earth or planetary alignment.

And course people have always been interested in celestial bodies such as planets including Jupiter. Who knows, it could have played a part in the bright sky over Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

Dr. Drummond states "There are generally two ways to look at the star of Bethlehem. You can try to connect an astronomical event and usually it's a conjunction of a star and a planet or conjunction of two planets. I think it is ok to look at it both ways. But I think looking at it from an astronomy point of view is interesting."

But for those who celebrate the birth of Christ the three wise men and a guiding star has such a deep meaning to their faith.

Dr. Drummond adds "Or you can look at it and say that is irrelevant. The star of Bethlehem is simply a miracle. When they saw something different in the sky. Whether it was the appearance of a very bright star or star in a constellation they connected it with world events. They connected it with something about to happen. And they kept up with things that were about to happen or might happen in the near future."

So a word of advice may be for all of us to keep an eye to the sky during this Christmas season.
