Educators at Cope Middle School received $200,000 As part of a grant funded initiative called the  8 -G grant.

"We have 3 labs here at Cope Middle School . We also have 2 mobile labs so with those labs our students are able to use computers on a daily basis pretty much," said Jacob Hesselschwardt,  6th grade math teacher.

The money came from an oil and gas settlement by the state back in 1986 that allows states along the coast to share funds to help with educational advancements of K-12 and higher education establishments.

"It was a great chunk of money. The type of money you can't go out and do fund raising for there is no doubt about it ," said Judy Grooms, Principal of Cope Middle School.

Grooms says Cope Middle- schoolers along with partnering schools, Green Acres Middle School and Airline High School, received funding from the grant 3 years ago but the money is still benefiting students.

"We had to look at students in need and demonstrate our need to a remedial elective in our case and Green Acres to help those Students shore up their skills in English language arts and math," said Grooms.

Educators where thrilled when they where able to get the grant. The school is also looking to apply for additional grant funding that this coming
February of 2014.
