Shreveport yearly crime rate drops in 2013

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Shreveport Police Sgt. Shawn Hinderberger scans the sidewalks and streets for suspicious behavior. Burglaries are up in this particular neighborhood.

"Juveniles being out of school are committing a lot of the burglaries," Hinderberger said. "During the daylight hours is when we're really stressing these neighborhoods to try to prevent burglaries or to try to catch the people doing the burglaries."

According to SPD's September crime comparison- the latest numbers available- overall crime is down 5% this year over last.

In the early 90s, there were up to 25,000 part one crimes a year, the category that includes homicide, rape, burglary, and other serious crimes. 2013 will likely end with a total half that: around 11,000.

The area with the highest percentage growth is also the most serious: homicide. SPD handled 20 murder investigations in 2011 and 2012 each, but 2013 has already seen 29 homicide investigations.

Rapes, robberies, burglaries and assaults were all down in the September report.

Shreveport police attribute the drop to a few reasons. First, the department's better funded with more officers.

"Our department has grown in direct coordination to the public safety needs of the citizens of Shreveport," SPD's Bill Goodin said.

The department has also put a stronger emphasis on community-oriented policing and neighborhood watch groups.

Hinderberger says about 40% of his shift is spent being proactive and talking to residents as opposed to responding to calls.

SPD says the area's different law enforcement agencies are working together more now than they ever have before.

"We're all working closer together because at the end of the day it doesn't matter what your badge says or what your uniform looks like, we all have the same mission," Goodin said. "That's serving the public."
