Advocare V100 Bowl brings fans in, boosts economy

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

It's the 4th best bowl match up this year according to the Associated Press, and it's being played in Shreveport. The Advocare V100 Bowl kicks off 11:30am Tuesday at Independence Stadium.

But the Arizona Wildcats and the Boston College Eagles plus their fans have been in town most of the weekend-- and are already spending money.

The teams and fans are from far away but its not expected to hurt the economic impact.

"You don't the volume [of fans] that you get when you have them [the teams] are a little more accessible," said Kelly Wells, vice president of sports and tourism at the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourism Bureau. "But they're still two markets that have already come in and spent a good bit of money."

Wells said in 2010 the Advocare V100 Bowl brought $20 million into the local economy.

As of noon Monday, 55 percent of the hotels in the area were booked for tonight with 77 percent taken for Tuesday night.

And with more than 70 percent of the tickets sold for the game, people are in town, spending money.

"The reputation of this bowl has become nationally known for its great hospitality and a new experience," said John Hubbard, chairman of the Independence Bowl Foundation." And we are living up to that reputation again this year."

Lilah's Bakery in the Louisiana Boardwalk helps provide the Louisiana experience to the visitors by selling king cakes a week early.

"The Mardi Gras season usually picks up here the last three or four weeks of Mardi Gras. Hopefully by getting them out early, it will get us rolling for the rest of the season."

The Tourism Bureau expects more fans to arrive Monday night, and boost--not only the hotel occupancy--but the all around sales in town. That includes the tickets to the game. There are still plenty for folks who want to see Arizona and Boston College play. They can buy them at the gate or at any area Brookshire's.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion.
