Police prepare for NYE drunk driving patrols

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

New Year's Eve brings party-goers out in droves, but they're not the only ones. Local law enforcement agencies say they'll be on the lookout for any revelers taking their celebration on the road.

"We see a lot of impaired drivers along the roadway," said SPD's Marcus Hines. "We're definitely going to be taking an aggressive stance, a proactive approach to try to curb the number of impaired drivers that are out on the roadway."

Shreveport Police have arrested 15 people for drunk driving since Christmas Eve, according to booking sheets.

Hines says sobriety patrols are just as much a part of the New Year's Eve routine as resolutions and champagne toasts. New Year's Day regularly ranks as the year's biggest day for drunk driving deaths. It's also among the most dangerous days for pedestrians.

Shreveport has another traffic concern coming December 31st; tens of thousands of football fans will head to Independence Stadium for this year's AdvoCare V100 Bowl. SPD is staffing the event with about 140 officers. That means the force will cover two major events in less than 24 hours.

"That's a great thing for the city here locally, however, with that comes additional officers who are out patrolling, who are making sure those visitors remain safe," Hines said.
