Patrick Williams ready to run for Shreveport Mayor

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

A top candidate takes a big step. Patrick Williams is ready to officially declare his run to be the next mayor of Shreveport.

He'll make a formal announcement Sunday afternoon at 1:15 at Lake Bethlehem Church.  Local political watchers consider Williams the frontrunner. The Democrat has support from both parties.

In an exclusive interview with KTBS 3 News, Williams explained why he decided to run.

"It's about being able to work with everybody. That's something I've been able to do in the legislature," Williams said. "And it's about making decisions -- prudent decisions -- and not based on political party. Not just based on race. But based on what's best for the community. I think that's what people are looking for now."

Williams has been a Louisiana state representative since 2007.  He was a Caddo Parish Commissioner from 2000 to 2004. By trade, Williams is an architect consultant, and owner of Williams Enterprises, LLC.

He'll have lots of company in the race to replace Cedric Glover, who is term limited.  Other candidates who say they're going to run are fellow state representative Roy Burrell, city councilman Sam Jenkins, former city councilwoman Maxine Sarpy, and Caddo Commissioner Michael Williams.

So who could break out from the pack?  KTBS Political Analyst Trey Gibson believes it'll be Patrick Williams.

"I think he's not very controversial. I think he's  had good relationships across the board as the Republican support would actually show. And so in the end I think he's going to be somebody that a lot of people could look to," Gibson explained.

Gibson adds that with five African American Democrats in the race, it may be difficult for Williams to avoid a runoff. But the key will be if all those candidates qualify for the election.
