Griffin's Good Life: Mike McCarthy

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to community involvement, 78 year old Mike McCarthy, with his wife at his side, wears many hats.

"We're on the Strand board, Opera board, I'm past chairman of the Shreveport Sports Authority," McCarthy said.

"We do this because it's the right thing to do. To give back to the community."

Mike is the chairman of Curtis Stout, a company which deals in all kinds of lighting, electrical automation and audio-visual products.

The company has lighted such venues as Independence Stadium and the Superdome.

Among his community efforts maybe his favorite is the Independence Bowl of which he's worked with for 30 years.

"I think it's great for the city. It's obviously one of the biggest tourist attractions. For our community. It gives us national recognition," he said.

Because of his job and his many civic endeavors, McCarthy is a very busy man. So why..at 78 does he keep working with the Independence Bowl when he could just step back and smell the roses?

Because it's passion.

"It's passion of working with the people...I enjoy working with people because I see their passion," McCarthy claims, "And the hard work that goes in the I-bowl is an example. The many volunteers that have helped make this bowl a success. I would no more consider quitting this activity than a man in the moon."

McCarthy also says he has no intention of retiring from his job, or anything else for that matter, and shared these thoughts about getting older.

"I would say this. I'm not getting old, I'm just getting older. And there's a big difference,"

Community minded 78 year old Mike McCarthy, a man who hasn't let his age stop him from living the good life.
