Police say violent home invasions are rare in Shreveport

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

A home invasion Sunday in Shreveport's Sunset Acres neighborhood turned deadly when the homeowner turned a gun on her teenaged robber.

Police say Devon Antonio Young, 16, entered a home in the 3000 block of Morningside Dr. about 6:15 p.m. and demanded money from a safe. The homeowner says she opened her safe, grabbed her gun and fired a single shot.

Young was hit in the upper body and died later Sunday night at the hospital.

Shreveport Police say these cases are few and far between.

In 2009, SPD said Jerome Hughes knocked on the front door of a West 79th St. home. When the homeowner, Martin Gobert, opened the door a second visitors, Jeremy Bell, jumped out and attacked him with an assault-style rifle. Gobert wrestled the firearm away from his attacker, and when he did Bell paid with his life.

Shreveport Police arrested Edward Clark and Robert Henry in Sept. 2011 after they forced their way into a Long Street home, robbed the two people inside at gunpoint and took off with thousands of prescription pills.

During Clark and Henry's escape, one of the victims armed himself, fired at the men but ultimately- and literally- shot himself in the foot.

The two men inside the home during Clark and Henry's home invasion were later arrested on drug charges related to the incident.

Bill Goodin, SPD Chief Administrative Assistant, says most would-be thieves prefer to avoid face-to-face contact with their victims.

"Typically, when we talk about residential burglaries that happens during the daytime," Goodin said. "The offender doesn't want anyone in the home. They want to get in and out without being seen, without contact."

According to Shreveport Police's 2012 crime report, robbery, burglary and overall violent crime rates have declined in the past decade.

Still that's of little comfort to those who find themselves involved in an incident.

As for this Sunday's homeowner and shooter, Shreveport Police say no charges have been filed. They're still collecting information to send to the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office for that decision.

"We're going to gather all the information, all the evidence and then forward that case and file to their folks," Goodin said. "Ultimately they will make a decision as far as charges or the lack there of."

Caddo Parish District Attorney Charles Scott says his office has yet to look at the case file and could not comment on the likelihood of charges or if this qualifies as a justifiable homicide.
