City of Shreveport to consider implementing traffic enforcement cameras on school buses

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

Traffic enforcement cameras took top spot on the agenda at an intergovernmental meeting at Independence Stadium in Shreveport today.

"Children are getting hurt."

Which is the main reason District G City Councilman Sam Jenkins says he organized a presentation from Arizona-based company American Traffic Solutions at the meeting.

"The idea now is to come up with a manner that would deter that type of conduct, that type of behavior," Jenkins says.

That behavior being not stopping for school buses that are stopped to let kids off, or speeding through school zones.

"This is one way we can change driver behavior through public awareness and through enforcement and it's an efficient way to do that at no cost to the taxpayers," says David Jackson with ATS.

No cost to the taxpayer because, according to Jackson, the traffic enforcement program is funded through citations.

Called 'Crossing Guard', the cameras would be mounted on the outside of the school bus, and automatically catch you on video if you don't stop while the bus's arm is extended.

"That information is then sent to law enforcement and they can make a determination if they want to issue a citation to the violator," Jackson says.

Still only an idea, Jenkins says he thinks it could be a viable option.

"We may have various committees involved that will need to review this."

Jenkins says the next step in this process will be for the agencies involved in implementing these cameras to look further into the idea.

If you think you've seen traffic enforcement cameras around Shreveport already, you haven't.

What you're seeing are cameras that help regulate the traffic lights, and actually have no capability of capturing images for the purpose of citing traffic violations.

He hopes to begin with school bus cams, and expand later into traffic cameras at intersections.
