Schools Preparing for the Flu

Posted: Updated:
CADDO - BOSSIER PARISH -

Influenza is widespread in Louisiana and many surrounding states. As students head back to classes, area schools are bracing for more flu activity.

Local schools say it's especially important for everyone to wash their hands.
They're also speaking with students in all grades about flu prevention.

In Caddo schools, 1st grade teacher Becky Lary, Eden Gardens Fundamental Magnet school, reminds students to cover their coughs and wash their hands to help the slow spread of germs.  "We always have a school nurse that comes in and talks to us about the importance of making sure our kids have every opportunity to wash their hands," said  Lary.

This week. The Bossier School district began discussing things they can do to be preventative in their classrooms with their kids and on school buses.http://www.bossierschools.org/nurses

"As far as from a district standpoint good old fashion soap and water, hand washing that is the most preventive method possible," said Public Liaison Sonja Bailes.

So far, Bossier or Caddo Schools have not reported higher than normal absences because of any flu like illness.

The health department  says it's not too late to get a flu shot, especially if you're pregnant, have a weak immune system or are over 65 years old.
