More pipes are breaking because of the recent freeze

Small business owners usually welcome an increase in business, but they say this high volume of emergency calls puts a lot of stress on them too.

"I personally turn on my water so it keeps something circulating through the night" says Mallory Jordan.

Mallory is taking precautions after she got an email from her landlord about the possibility of frozen or broken pipes due to cold weather. It's a warning that came too late for some.

"Our neighbor's pipes burst last night or sometime today and there was water everywhere" says Mallory.

A family operation for 90 years, Giglio Plumbing is at full staff around the clock to keep up with the number of emergency calls.

"It's been hectic, especially this afternoon when it started warming up. Pipes were already broken and when they thaw out, they realize they have them. They didn't have water before but when they do get water, they realize it" says Joe Giglio.

Giglio says they got a rush of phone calls this morning and afternoon. Their call volume is up roughly five times higher than it was before the freeze. The Giglio's and other local plumbers are struggling to keep up with the sudden demand.

"It's good for our volume of business, but it's hard on us too. Of course, we want to take care of everybody in a timely manner. We don't like leaving anybody in a lurch but unfortunately there's only so much we can do" says Giglio.

The Giglio's said that in some cases, there were some simple steps that could have prevented busted pipes.

1. Turn on your faucets and leave a small stream running overnight.

2. Wrap pipes to insulate them before the temperature drops.

3. Open cabinets and closets to keep pipes warmer.

4. Keep your heat turned up. If you're trying to conserve power, you may pay for it with a call to the plumber.
