Matthew Prunty fights for SPD reinstatement

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

He spent two decades patrolling Shreveport streets. Now Matthew Prunty is fighting to wear the SPD uniform once again.

The former SPD employee was terminated from his position on the force in May 2013. SPD cited policy violations, but Prunty's supporters say he was fired for taking too many days off after his twin brother Sgt. Tim Prunty was shot and killed while on duty.

Matthew Prunty stood before the Shreveport Civil Service Board Wednesday afternoon to appeal the termination.

While he did not get the reinstatement he'd hoped for, both sides were able to work out an agreement.

Prunty will meet with a psychologist in Dallas for another evaluation. If things go favorably, he may get his job back.

"I think that the honorable thing to do is ask for a third opinion," Shreveport Police Officers Association's Michael Carter said. "If you're looking for a tiebreaker, that's the honorable way to do it."

As a policy, Shreveport Police do not comment on personnel issues.

Prunty's attorney, Pam Jones, declined to comment as well.

Both sides are scheduled to appear before the Civil Service Board again April 9 to go over the psychological evaluation.

Christopher Cope is currently serving life in prison for Tim Prunty's 2010 murder.
