Updated screening process helps Bossier City Animal Control prevent pet gifting

Posted: Updated:
BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTBS) -

Every year, the trend comes back around to 'bite' us.

Thousands of animals across the nation given as gifts during the holidays, then abandoned after Christmas.

Bossier City Animal Control tried something a little different this holiday season to try and 'sink its teeth' into the problem.

"Nobody really knows the type of dog someone else really wants and we want our dogs to stay in the home that they leave here in so they're not being changed out."

Director Kay Laborde says the staff now specifically asks those interested in adopting if the animal is for them or for someone else on the adoption screening questionnaire.

"If you're getting it for someone else we refuse it."

Forever home - that's the goal - and Laborde says that can't always be accomplished when the person on the receiving end isn't quite prepared for Fido under the tree.

"It hasn't slowed us down. It hasn't slowed us down at all. The ones that were really wanting to get a gift for someone else has come back with that person, and we've done the adoption anyway."

Laborde says a great option is a gift certificate, which they offer to cover the cost of spay and neuter.

KTBS 3 News checked with the Humane Society of East Texas, and they also have a thorough screening process to determine if someone's looking to adopt for a gift.

They say, so far, that's worked and they haven't had any returns.

The Humane Society of East Texas also offers gift certificates that can be refunded if the recipient decides not to adopt.

Caddo Parish Animal Control doesn't specifically ask that question, but the director there says their screening process has been successful in preventing gift adoptions.

You can adopt a pet from Bossier City Animal Control, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3217 Old Shed Road.

Also, find a furry friend every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bossier Pet Smart store.

Hours for adoption at Caddo Parish Animal Control are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 1500 Monty Street in Shreveport.
