Bridge City Project to help homeless

Posted: Updated:
Texarkana, Texas -

Surviving winter for the homeless is something most people can only imagine.

That's why a Texarkana shelter has come up with a unique way to raise awareness and collect donations that will help house some of the city's most chronically homeless.

It was about this time last year that Demetrius Baylor sought help from the Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter.

After finding a job, Baylor was able to qualify in their rental assistance program.

"I couldn't have got it without their help, said Baylor. "Their program is very beneficial."

Right now, there's no more funds available for that program, but shelter officials are hoping an upcoming fundraiser will provide money for a similar program that helps those who are chronically homeless.

It's part of a national movement called the 100,000 Homes Campaign.

"Chronically homeless are those who've been homeless for an extended period of time, they're dealing with a disability, or those who've been homeless multiple times in a short period, said Jennifer Laurent, Executive Director.

Laurent says the Bridge City Project will challenge people to experience homelessness by staying in cardboard boxes overnight.

They can buy their way out of it with $100 and by getting someone else to take their place.

"Most people have no idea the great number of those facing homelessness, those homeless right now, and those that could be homeless in the future," said Laurent.

All of the money will stay local.

Their goal is to raise about $25,000.

"We hope to make alot of difference in alot of lives," said Laurent.

The Bridge City Project will be held on January 24th.
