Lengthy Illness Claims Life of Longtime Lawman

HOMER, La. -

 

Funeral services have been set for former U.S. Marshal and Claiborne Parish Sheriff J.R. Oakes.
The 84 year old died today at Northern Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston following a lengthy illness.
A service for Oakes will be Saturday at 2pm at First Baptist Church in Homer.  Burial will follow at the Homer Arlington Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday evening from 5 until 7 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer.
Oakes served as sheriff of Claiborne Parish from 1968 to 1993 when he was appointed U.S. Marshal, Western District of Louisiana, by President Bill Clinton following his nomination to this post by U.S. Senators J. Bennett Johnston and John Breaux.
