DESOTO PARISH, La. (KTBS) -

KTBS 3 News has learned that long-time Bossier City mayor George Dement has passed away.

A friend of the family says Dement died at his Frierson, LA farm surrounded by family around 11 a.m. Sunday morning.

He shared the home with his late wife, Sunshine, after retiring from political office in 2005.

Dement would have celebrated his 92nd birthday on January 23rd, and served as mayor of Bossier City from 1989 - 2005.

Before entering politics, he owned and managed restaurants and hotels in the Shreveport-Bossier City area; he was known locally as "The Innkeeper."

Dement was elected mayor in 1989 as a Democrat and was re-elected to second, third, and fourth terms in 1993, 1997, and in 2001.

In 2003, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by his alma mater, Centenary College, for outstanding service.

Dement was preceded in death by a son, David Dement; grandson, Marcus Dement and his wife of 64 years Sunshine Norris Dement, who died in 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Rev. Ann Dement Montes; his three sons, Tim, Steve and Walter Dement. Services are through Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 am at First Baptist Church of Bossier City.
