Caddo crime, sheriff says cases decreased

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, La. -

Caddo Parish may be a safer place than it was a year ago. The sheriff's office released its 2013 crime stats last week and found they had decreased. In fact, it claims crime dropped 12 percent in 2013, when compared to 2012.

That's just 209 fewer crimes. The sheriff's report finds there were no homicides in rural Caddo Parish last year either. Overall, violent crimes went down from 680 cases in 2012 to 581 in 2013. However, the sheriff's office found that cases of rape did increase from 19 to 25, and cases of simple burglary also increased from 271 to 275. As for the cases that did decrease, many accredit that to a stronger relationship between deputies and communities.

"We as a sheriff's office are part of the community," Lt. John Fourcade said. "It's a team effort. The more input we get from the citizens, the better we are at our job."

Fourcade says community liaison are constantly interacting with citizens in their territory and monitoring the environment.

"They know the people out there," Fourcade said. "They know the businesses, what's supposed to be there and what's not supposed to be there."

He says the sheriff's program for auxiliary deputies, officers with limited power, also helps keep crime low. It puts more eyes and ears on the roads to monitor.

"We're going to keep doing what we're doing, and we're going to try and do it better again this coming year," Fourcade said. "It's our goal."

Those crime numbers don't include the City of Shreveport or incorporated areas with their own police departments.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...
