Arklatex blood banks in need of donations

Local blood banks are always in need of blood donations, but right now supplies are especially low. Several things have combined to create the perfect storm and now Lifeshare Blood Centers need your help.

"It's not unusual after the holidays to see this dip, because not as many people have gotten out the last few weeks," says Lifeshare Director of Public Relations and Communications Tina Hooper.

She says that's understandable.

"People do just get busy around the holidays. There are additional social gatherings, shopping and people get busy and maybe they forget that this is something that we still need to do."

Also over Christmas vacation, there are no high school blood drives from the end of December through early January. And add to that a particularly bad flu season. This year, many businesses have canceled scheduled blood drives because of the flu.

"So they've said, you know, don't come over today, because I know that we don't have enough people to donate because they're out sick," said Hooper.

With those issues combined, Hooper says Lifeshare is in critical need of donations especially Type O Negative, the universal donor.

They're thankful for people like Darell Cottonham who donated his blood on Monday. He has a big heart and plenty of blood to share.

"I feel it's my way of giving back. There's someone out there who needs blood and I have it," he said.

If you haven't made a New Year's resolution yet, Lifeshare has an idea for you. They're asking people to make a resolution to give blood three times in 2014. That's only once every four months. Lifeshare needs 1,000 units a day to keep local hospitals supplied. So if you can give blood, remember, there's always a need but particularly right now.
