Pitbulls stolen from Texarkana animal shelter

Posted: Updated:
TEXARKANA, Ark. -

Dogfighting may have been a motive in an overnight break-in at a Texarkana animal shelter.

Officials say five pitbulls, a cat, and pet supplies were stolen from the Animal Care and Adoption Center on the Arkansas-side.

It's estimated to have cost the shelter thousands of dollars in damages.

"This has left us devastated, we're just praying for a safe return of our pets," said Connie Slater, Executive Director, Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Slater says surveillance video at the shelter shows the alleged thieves walking through the building and stealing pitbulls.

Investigators examined the back door that was broken and the areas where the cameras had been shattered.

Slater says the supply room was ransacked.

"They took alot of dog food, they stole alot of the seven-in-one shots for the dogs, just numerous items," said Slater.

She says this is the 5th time the shelter has been broken into in the last two months, but this time they have better video of the alleged thieves.

She believes all of the break-ins are related.

"I'm concerned that they are training these dogs to dog fight, that's why we are really begging the public to step up and help because we can see this being a very bad situation," said Slater.

Shelter officials say they appreciate any donations that could help make up for some of the stolen supplies.

Meanwhile, Slater believes those responsible for the break-in will be caught, she just hopes it won't be too late.

"We just want our babies back and to get to the bottom of this," explained Slater. "We want these guys to get the appropriate punishment."

A total of nine pitbulls have been stolen in the last two months.
