Shreveport City Council approves plan to construct dog park

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

After months of barking back and forth there's a deal on a dog park for Shreveport. City officials voted in favor of moving the proposed dog park to Stoner beach. This has been more than 2 years in the making. Originally, the dog park was going to be at Hamel park but after Mayor Glover said it would be too expensive for the city, dog park supporters suggested Stoner Beach.

The Red River Waterway Commission has agreed to provide up to $280,130 to construct a dog park at a location near the Stoner boat launch. The dog park alliance will contribute up to $28,013 to pay for planning, design and other expenses.

A major part of the compromise also calls for the council to repeal a resolution that required the Mayor to sign an agreement to accept the waterway commission funding in order to construct a dog park at Charles and Marie Hamels Memorial Park. The Mayor refused to sign that legislation because it obligated the City to fund additional expenses related to the dog park -- which ultimately could have amounted to another $300,000.

Mayor Glover has voiced support for the issue and council members voted in favor of the deal as well. Cynthia Keith with the Shreveport Dog Park Alliance says she had no idea the dog park issue would become this big of an ordeal. "I thought that this would be something everybody would be in favor of, most cities our size have dog parks. It shouldn't be a struggle like this. I had no idea it would take this long but it was worth it and in the end, the city's the big winner."

Once Mayor Glover signs the legislation, the dog park lawsuit against him will be dropped and the city can move forward with designing and building the dog park at Stoner Beach.
