Big votes at Government Plaza

Posted: Updated:

There were lots of fireworks at government plaza Tuesday as city officials hashed out issues facing the city. From same sex protection to who will handle the city's financial business, it was all hashed out in a meeting that lasted for more than 4 hours.

Pamela Raintree says she brought the first stone for anyone against the be fair ordinance to cast at her because of her sexual identity. "The time for discrimination in America has long passed. I'm in a position where being transsexual isn't something I can hide and there are people here who get discriminated against a lot."

Council members voted to strike the appellate legislation from their agenda, allowing the be fair ordinance to stay on the books. Other supporters of be fair say they came out to support the ordinance after councilman Ron Webbs spoke out against socializing with same sex couples. Christopher Canizares said of Webb's statements, "I couldn't believe this was coming out of a councilman's, someone who's representing the city, this is coming out of his mouth."

And the debate continued between city officials as Mayor Glover and council chairperson Joe Shyne discussed the financial advisor issue with Grigsby and Associates, after council members have come out against continuing to do business with the firm that Glover chose. Mayor Glover said he felt like they were looking for a weak mayor. Glover said, "The unfortunate reality is that's not going to happen as long as i am the sworn holder of this position."

Despite Mayor Glover's opposition, city council members then voted 6 to 1 to pass a resolution asking Mayor Glover take applications to hire a new financial advisor for the city of Shreveport.

Also in Tuesday's meeting, BI Tech monitoring, the parole reporting office, and the Montessori School of Shreveport have agreed that the parole office will leave their current facility-which is right across the street from the school-within 120 days.
