Mardi Gras economy, new study will find season's impact

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

If you've been to one of the Mardi Gras parades, it'll come as no surprise that the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourism Bureau regards the season as a big moneymaker for the area.

Krewe of Harambee members expect around 10,000 people to show for Monday's celebration. Shreveport-Bossier City business owners will be looking for big crowds and cash. It's estimated Mardi Gras can generate around $32 million in the area.

That's an old estimate. It came out in a study in 2006, but the tourism bureau has another study it hopes to release next year.

"Mardi Gras has changed a great deal in Shreveport-Bossier since 2006," Chris Jay, with the tourism bureau, said.

Jay says the study needs information from 2014's Mardi Gras season. He expects to see a rise in parade-goers and how much they spend in the area. Jay says creative ideas from local businesses encourage a larger impact.

"A business like Marilynn's Place, the restaurant, where they have basically invented a block party that takes place after the Krewe of Highland Parade," Jay said.

Jay points out Mardi Gras also advertises Shreveport-Bossier City tourism well outside the Arklatex.

"It's an enormous event that presents us with the opportunity to talk about this city," Jay said.
Jay says the new study should be released around Mardi Gras 2015.
