2 Become 1: Pelican flies for Stanley

Posted: Updated:
Stanley, LA -

The girls high school basketball team in Stanley, Louisiana started district play last night and with that win is a perfect 30-0 so far this season.  That's a far cry from a year ago.  Tatum Everett has more on this teams' transition from a unique off-season.

Cleve Craig has coached girls basketball for 19 years in DeSoto parish, 18 of those at Pelican High School.  But Craig faced the toughest challenge of his career when the school board shut the doors at Pelican high, forcing he and most of his team to switch and attend nearby Stanley High School.

Stanley won 4 games total last season, which was a far cry from the Pelican state semifinal team last season and the state championship team the year before.  But Craig said he faced the transition of melding the two teams into one head on.  The coach and players weren't the only ones to have made a seemless transition.  Craig was actually more worried about how the communities would support one another but they all seem to be making the best out of a bad situation.

The last time Stanley made it to the state semifinals was in 1946 and this may be the school's best chance at a championship in more than 60 years.
