Riverboat casino revenues down, nothing to worry about

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT - BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTBS) -

Gamblers in Louisiana lost more than $200 million at the state's casinos last month, down 4.4 percent from 2012.

Comparing Shreveport-Bossier City riverboat casino's revenues from November to December, Boomtown is the only one that made money. It wasn't much at one percent but they were in the black.

However, comparing December 2013 to the year before, everyone lost money except Margaritaville who was not around last year.

It's a decrease one analyst says could not be avoided.

"December of 2013 only had four weekends in it and the proceeding year, December 2012, had five," said Wade Duty, executive director for the Louisiana Casino Association. "Without those numbers, it definitely skews the numbers."

Duty follows casino trends for the LCA. Even though Shreveport-Bossier's riverboat casinos lost almost six percent of revenue in December compared to November, duty does not think we should worry.

"No where near any panic level by any means, it's just a little bit of a downward trend," he said

But this downward trend seems to have started back in August. It was all of the casinos' best month of the year. The market made more than $61 million but has slowly tapered off since then with a couple casinos spiking in November.

"These are not major swings that I think are indicative to any kind of long term trend," Duty said. "You saw a big impact when Oklahoma came online. You saw a major impact when the recession hit Louisiana and Texas. But the rest of this is just well within the normal fluctuations that we would expect to see."

Duty would not comment on what part Margaritaville's entrance into the market plays on these revenue reports, saying it's still too early to tell. He wants to see a full year of data before making any conclusions.
