WESLA scam continues, Credit Union works with those affected

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

Some may think it sounds legit on the surface, but it's not. A phishing scam that uses WESLA Federal Credit Union's name to try and lure you in has been identified in the ArkLaTex.

The main branch on Williamson Way in south Shreveport was open from 9:00am to 1:00pm Monday to help those who fell for the scam.

Calls and text messages went out to folks through out the area over the weekend, claiming WESLA Visa debit and credit cards were frozen and needed your card number in order to reactivated it. The Federal Credit Union issued a statement on its web site identifying the calls and messages as a scam, saying:

"WESLA FCU would not ask for your confidential information in this manner. We are currently investigating the source as well as notifying the authorities. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience or concerns you may have. your money and personal information is secure at WESLA Federal Credit Union.

Unfortunately some people found out it was a scam too late.

"I was shocked," said Dorothy DeSoto, who gave out her bank information. "I couldn't figure out what was going on. At 73 years old, you just don't work as fast."

Others who made the mistake told KTBS they still aren't sure what's going to be happening with their account, but they are glad that WESLA was able to help them Monday, a bank holiday. Even those who were not affected by the scam were happy to see they were helping.

"I think that's real good that they're open," Lenard Jones, who banks with WESLA. "I just wanted to cash a check and find out what was going on but I see they're not letting anyone in except those that were affected. I think it's good. I'm glad I wasn't affected."

All WESLA Federal Credit Union branches will be open Tuesday during its regular banking hours to help all of their members. They encourage anyone that answered the scam call and gave out banking information to call 1-800-453-4270 to block your card.

WESLA's CEO, Linda Murrow, said they still do not know how many people were affected, but from what they can tell, between $1200 and $1800 is the amount of money taken out of the accounts. Those who had money removed are not responsible for more than $50 dollars. That is if they contact the credit union before Wednesday night at 11:59. Call 1-800-453-4270 to do so.
