Kaitlyn Mills remembered, school plants tree to remember student

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTBS) -

Students, faculty and staff at Central Park Elementary School in Bossier City began the healing process Wednesday, weeks after the flu took the life of 3rd grader Kaitlyn Mills.

Mills' brother, parents and other family members attended a tree planting ceremony in her honor. Teachers say the planting gives students and faculty to chance to say a final goodbye to their beloved friend. The tree will grow and always serve as a reminder of Kaitlyn's love and kindness. The school's principal says the community support has been great and much appreciated.

"The community support has been wonderful. It's been absolutely unbelievable," Suzette Hadden, the principal, said. "Then the preacher at the funeral service talked about how an 8-year-old brought a community together like this, he doesn't realize how much he hit it right on the head. An 8-year-old could have done what she's done even in death."

The tree is a red maple, which has blushed leaves, representing Mills' favorite color pink.
