Autistic DeSoto Parish teen looking for prom date through YouTube video

Posted: Updated:
LOGANSPORT, La -

A DeSoto Parish high school senior is looking for a prom date, and his family is turning to YouTube to help in his search.

So what's the big deal? Well, 18-year-old Stanley, LA teen Christian English is mild to moderately autistic.

His mom, Heather English, says Christian didn't say his first word until he was five years old, and that was after years of struggling to understand exactly what was wrong.

"He was born normal, and around 18 months of age, it was like a light switch turned off.

She says when he was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3, a light bulb went off for her, because she could finally put a finger on why he was different.

"With a lot of therapy, and help from our family and his school, he's come a long way."

In fact, Christian has no shortage of friends. Heather says his peers at Stanley High School are fiercely protective and make it a point to always look out for him.

But with April 12th quickly approaching, and only one shot at senior prom, Christian's making good use of technology to find the perfect girl to take to the dance.

His mom created a YouTube video detailing what a special person he is, after a friend of hers joked that she should post it on the internet.

His story's gaining steam through social media, and Heather says she never expected the overwhelming positive response.

"Us, as parents, knowing that there's that many people that love and want to support your son, it really makes your heart soar, it's truly heart-touching," she says, adding that their community is like one big family.

And Christian has his sights set on one young lady in particular - 16-year-old Sadie Robertson, from the Duck Dynasty reality show, something he enjoys watching regularly.

"Sadie, will you dance with me?" Christian asks, with his easy smile.

In their small community, Heather says, somewhat of an informal support group has formed for parents of autistic children.

She says when Christian was young, little was known or understood about autism, so she tries to lend help and guidance to other parents whenever she can.
