Couple charged with growing pot

Posted: Updated:

A Mansfield couple is accused of planting their own pot.

According to Lt. Ray Sharrow of the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Department, on January 23, the Tri Parish Narcotics Division along with the Investigation Division of the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office received a tip of Marijuana being grown in a residence. Acting on this anonymous tip, agents and investigators responded to a residence located just outside of Mansfield, made contact with the homeowner and explained why they responded to the home.

After the agents explained that they had a tip that Marijuana was being grown in the home, Desiree Rains told the agents that she did have some Marijuana growing in the house and gave the agents permission to search the home and even told them where the plants could be located. A small grow box was found in a room of the home with a grow light attached to the box for artificial sun light needed for the plants' growth. Inside the box, agents located four juvenile Marijuana plants growing inside. Also located in the home was a suspected glass-smoking pipe and other drug related paraphernalia, loose Marijuana, a shotgun as well as some unspent shotgun shells.

Also, a 13-month-old child was also located in the home and was subsequently released to a family friend.

Ms. Rains, age 20, was placed under arrest and charged with Cultivation of Marijuana, Possession of a Legend Drug, Illegal Use of CDS in Presence of a Person Under 17 years of age, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Marijuana, second offense.
David A. Collum, age 23, was charged with Cultivation of Marijuana, Possession of a Legend Drug, Illegal use of CDS in Presence of a Person Under 17 years of age, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Schedule I Drugs, and Possession of a firearm in the presence of a CDS.

Collum, who is Ms. Rains boyfriend, was placed under arrest when he arrived at the DPSD.

With a rise in online classes, many educational institutions are asking the question, how can they maintain academic integrity in the digital age.
